Michigan State University Child Development Laboratory
Originally built in 1927 as the Olivet Baptist Church, this 19,350 SF, three-story structure has undergone multiple renovations. Through a thoughtful adaptive reuse approach, the Gillespie Group, Michigan State University (MSU), and Integrated Architecture are transforming the building to house the MSU Child Development Lab, a vibrant center for early childhood education. The design strikes a balance between historic preservation and modern functionality, incorporating natural forms, patterns, and processes to create a nurturing environment. Large windows allow for enhanced natural light, while warm materials and organic shapes create a sense of comfort and exploration. The new program features classrooms for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, as well as an activity gym, offices, and a welcoming entry and commons area. Flexible learning spaces support various teaching methods, while open sightlines ensure safety and connectivity. By integrating biophilic design principles and preserving key architectural elements, the project breathes new life into the historic structure, creating an inspiring space where children can learn, play, and grow.
