David D. Hunting YMCA

The David D. Hunting YMCA emerges from the urban landscape to offer a tangible manifestation of the Y’s emphasis on community. Adjacent to the GVSU downtown campus, it provides visitors, staff, and faculty with a nearby fitness option. Designed to be a ‘destination’ Y, it radiates energy and excitement by physically and visually connecting people and spaces, both within the facility and to passersby. Its popularity reflects the building’s success. Before its July 2005 opening, membership was anticipated to reach 12,000. The actual membership two years later was 17,500, exceeding expectations by over 31%. The first LEED NC Certified YMCA in the nation, the David D. Hunting symbolizes the Y’s future—sustainable, healthy buildings filled with people developing strong bodies, minds, and spirits.
