Responding to an increased demand for recreational space, the Kelly Family Sports Center provides additional sports, fitness and educational opportunities for GVSU students. Functional, sustainable, cost-effective and student-focused, the 138,000SF building was shaped by the sports program, specifically the 100-yard field and six-lane, 300-meter indoor track. The structurally complex long span building is intentionally positioned to maximize available sunlight, solar heating and natural ventilation. Sustainable highlights include photo-voltaic roof panels, solar wall technology, a turf roof and rain gardens. It boasts a 25% improvement over baseline energy consumption and earned a $247,791 tax credit under the 2005 Energy Policy Act.
