University Club Begins Renovations of New Downtown Clubhouse

After 100 years, the University Club of Grand Rapids is making a move to a new downtown clubhouse.

The University Club, founded in 1923, will move from the Fifth-Third Center at 111 Lyon St. to the old Peninsula Club at 116 and 120 Ottawa Ave. NW.

In an effort to increase membership, the University Club will renovate the old Pen Room, which is over 100 years old. The new clubhouse features renovated bars, conference rooms, social rooms, a library space, and even a game room in the basement. The space will house any sort of event for the 250 members in the club.

“We’re adding to the history by building something new and fresh,” said Tom Pantlind, president of the University Club board. “That idea has resonated with members and non-members alike to be able to say, ‘This is something that I want for the community.’”
