Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park

The State of Michigan’s investment in Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park aims to enhance visitor experience, modernize infrastructure, and support environmental stewardship to ensure the park remains accessible and enjoyable for future generations.

Key improvements include a newly designed entrance to the campground, which addresses traffic backup issues and creates a smoother inbound and outbound experience for visitors.  Outdated infrastructure will be replaced with modern amenities and customer service areas to better support the visitor experience. A new Contact Station building and entry design, with additional lanes for vehicle traffic and camper registration, will result in better internal traffic flow.

The new sanitation station will accommodate more camper use and staging to allow for a smoother experience. Adjacent DNR-owned land south of the campground is being connected by a new bridge designed to minimize impact on natural resources. The new park headquarters will be located on this land, reducing visitors’ views of work areas and equipment.

The design of both new buildings was guided by the Park’s unique urban camping experience as well as the need for functional, welcoming, and efficient spaces for administrative staff, camper support, and maintenance work.

Construction will be completed by the end of 2026.
