Drawing Inspiration from Local Heritage
Sawmill Lofts draws inspiration from its local heritage and natural surroundings, a vision our designers developed in collaboration with Michigan Community Capital while bringing new affordable housing and commercial space to the Grayling community.
The lobby’s lumber mural made of reclaimed wood beams, along with custom wood signage, references Grayling’s historic lumber industry. Green accents used throughout the building are a nod to the forests surrounding the Northern Michigan town. For the façade, a mix of materials was used to complement the existing downtown architecture while also giving Sawmill Lofts a distinct identity. Two of the final exterior details added, a large exterior mural and an oar crosswalk design, further celebrate the local identity that is deeply connected to the outdoors. The previously vacant site now houses 42 new apartments that connect residents to downtown conveniences and local trails, all within walking distance.
