Construction
Communications has selected three Integrated Architecture
projects from more than 2,500 nominated for inclusion in
their upcoming special Real Estate & Construction Review
Midwest Green Success Stories edition.
The IA featured projects include:
Davenport University
Student Center and Field House
Grand Haven State Park
Toilet / Shower Building
Grand Valley State University
Laker Turf Building
Recognized
as among the regions most important, innovative sustainable
facilities, each project will be featured in a case study
that explains the owners goals and the resulting design
and construction process.
DU
Student Center and Field House, LEED certification pending.
This facility serves up amenities rivaling those found in
universities ten times its size. Designed to create a visible,
dramatic impression from the nearby freeway, it reinforces
the iconic image of a University that has come of age. Filled
with natural light and sustainable materials, the soon to
be LEED certified building is as healthy as the students
who work, study and play within.
Grand
Haven State Park Toilet / Shower Building. Respecting
the parks environmental tradition, the facility
was designed and built using straight forward, sustainable,
cost effective solutions, to create a state-of-the-
art environment for 90,000 annual State Park visitors while
illustrating that efficient and beautiful architecture can
be achieved in buildings designed for even the most necessary
functions. First year savings:
35% reduction in energy use and a 12% decrease in water
use.
GVSU
Laker Turf Building, Gold LEED NC. The term Fast
Track has an entirely different meaning at the Laker
Turf Building. Functional, sustainable, cost-effective and
student focused, the design was shaped by the 100-yard field
and indoor track. Positioned to maximize available sunlight,
solar heating and
natural ventilation, its sustainable attributes include
a geothermal heat pump, photovoltaic solar panels providing
20 KW of electricity, and 3,000 SF of SolarWall paneling
on the buildings South that cools the building in
the summer and warms it in the winter. Storm water is managed
with a 9,000 SF rain garden / retention pond system which
collects the runoff from the massive roof to irrigate the
adjacent athletic fields.
